John is originally from Charlotte, North Carolina. After graduating from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 2001, John obtained a Masters of Banking and Finance (2002) and his Juris Doctorate (2005) from the University of Alabama.

Upon graduation, John began work in Mobile, Alabama with a large Mobile firm handling general litigation and oil, gas & mineral issues. In 2007, John began work with a Birmingham firm specializing in business and other litigation. John’s practice eventually grew to include not only business litigation, but also general business advice and counsel and business transactions. John’s current practice includes business and commercial litigation, general litigation, corporate law and transactional matters, as well as specific specialties in such areas as shareholder and business disputes, and real property issues, including conservation easements and title insurance litigation.

John was recognized by Super Lawyers publication as a Rising Star in 2013, in the area of Business Litigation in each year since 2013 (2014-present), and by Best Lawyers in the area of Real Property Litigation (2018-19).

John is a member of the Alabama (2005), Florida (2006) and Mississippi (2006) Bar Associations, and regularly handles matters across the State of Alabama and in the Florida panhandle.

  • Represented a Birmingham company in litigation regarding the termination and removal of a shareholder
  • Represented a shareholder of a Birmingham company in the purchase/buyout of his majority partner
  • Represented lenders and borrowers in the negotiation and drafting of loan documents in a number of different transactions
  • Represented a number of local companies in disputes regarding stock compensation for employees
  • Represented a number of local companies and their majority shareholders in disputes related to employees/minority shareholders soliciting business of the companies for their own benefit
  • Represented a real estate developer in regard to obligations to lenders, including plans to protect the developer’s assets from any future creditors
  • Represented a number of different clients, both lenders and borrowers, in lender-liability disputes
  • Represented insurance agents in claims related to the sale of life and specific medical issues insurance
  • Represented a minority shareholder of a professional medical business in a squeeze-out dispute with the majority shareholder
  • Represented various parties to conservation easement transactions
  • Represented various parties in litigation regarding conservation easements
